About us
The Asian Blind Union, commonly known as ‘ABU’ is a non-Governmental, non-religious, non-political and non-profit organization having a regional character. It is one of the six regional arms of the World Blind Union.
As many as 26 national organizations of and for the blind based in 21 countries of South Asia, the Middle East and Central Asia constitute the ABU membership.
Some of the key priority areas of our organization are:
• To act as a bridge between the World Blind Union and its affiliate organizations;
• To keep contact with member organizations for promoting better coordination and cooperation among organizations of and for the visually impaired persons and to strengthen inter-country as well as intra-country linkages;
• Strengthening the ABU affiliate members to become effective agents of change in their respective countries;
• All round empowerment of visually impaired women;
• Providing accessible and affordable technologies to the visually impaired in ABU countries;
• Ensure the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons With Disabilities by various country governments;
• To strengthen self-advocacy initiatives.
The organizational structures of Asian Blind Union are truly democratic, representative in terms of geographical balance and gender equity as well as accommodative of the concerns and views of the visually impaired persons residing in various ABU countries. The Office bearers and Executive members of Asian Blind Union are elected for a four year term or till the next elections are held. The last elections were held in April, 2008 during the fourth General Assembly of the organization which took place in New Delhi India.
