Standing committees
After its restructuring in the year 2000, the Executive of the Asian Blind Union reorganized the previous Committee structure to make it more in line with the structures of the World Blind Union. Each committee focuses on a particular priority area of the organization and acts as an important interface between the central leadership and the national affiliates for the purposes of carrying out various activities of the Asian Blind Union.
Renowned visually impaired professionals in specific focus areas act as chairpersons of these committees. As far as possible, the members are drawn from various national affiliates of ABU. Care is taken to ensure that each of the three sub-regions of the organization: namely, South Asia, the Middle East and Central Asia, is represented on every Committee. In order to promote gender representation, every attempt is made to include at least one woman in every Committee. The term of the standing committee chairpersons and members is decided by the ABU Executive as per the provisions of the organization’s Constitution.
The role of the standing committees is to make recommendations regarding various activities, projects and/or research work which should be undertaken by ABU. The recommendations are discussed by the ABU officers and Executive. The planned activities/projects are executed with the help of the standing committees and various national affiliates.
Presently, Asian Blind Union has 6 standing committees:
• Women’s Committee;
• Education Committee;
• Advocacy-cum-Human Rights Committee;
• Technology Committee;
• Committee on Braille;
• Fund Raising Committee.
